EMWD Encourages Emergency Preparedness
Perris, CA (September 19, 2019) — September is National Preparedness Month and Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) urges its customers to be prepared in the event of an emergency that may result in a significant water service interruption.
In the event of an outage, EMWD crews will work to quickly and safely restore water service. However, a large earthquake or other disaster could result in extended outages that would require customers to have supplies on hand to meet their basic needs.
Ready.gov – which is run by the Department of Homeland Security – encourages families to have enough bottled water on hand to last up to three days. A typical supply is one gallon per person, per day. Additional water should be kept on hand for pets.
To prepare emergency water supplies, customers may follow these simple steps:
- Use two-liter soda bottles, as they are made from long-lasting plastic that will not impart taste or cause discoloration if properly cleaned.
- Wash the bottles using mild dish soap, and sanitize them using 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach in one quart of water. Cover the bottle, rinse and drain it, and let it air dry.
- Fill each container and seal, leaving as little space for air as possible.
- Store each container in a cool, dark place that will be easily accessible in an emergency. Be sure to label each container with the date it was filled. Water should be replaced annually.
“Following these steps will help ensure your family has enough water on hand in the event of an emergency,” EMWD President Ron Sullivan said. “While EMWD will work to restore service as quickly as possible in an emergency, it is always a good habit to be prepared to meet the basic needs of each member of your household in the event of an extended outage.”
