EMWD Celebrates World Wetlands Day
Perris, CA (February 2, 2024) — As part of its ongoing commitment to being a partner to the environment, Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) is proud to celebrate World Wetlands Day on February 2.
EMWD operates a man-made Wetlands facility at its San Jacinto Valley Regional Water Reclamation Facility. The facility hosts public birding tours and is the home to EMWD’s nationally-recognized education program, which hosts regular field trips at the facility for students in EMWD’s service area.
EMWD’s Wetlands facility was constructed in the 1990s as part of a partnership with the United States Bureau of Reclamation and was originally a pilot project for the treatment of recycled water. Today, it hosts thousands of people per year and is the home to more than 100 bird species that visit the facility as part of the Pacific Flyway.
EMWD hosts birding tours from October through April at the facility. The tours are the second Saturday of each month (weather permitting), and reservations may be made at www.emwd.org/bird-walks. EMWD also hosts a live webcam of the facility, which may be viewed at www.emwd.org/wetlands.
As the world celebrates the environmental benefits of wetlands and their role in the ecosystem and our water supplies, EMWD is proud to be doing its part to manage this important facility.
